Science in Finland
You can almost guess what research is focussed on in Finland by looking at a few key facts about the country: Over 70 per cent of the country is covered by huge forests, and a further 10 per cent of the surface area is taken up by over 187,888 lakes - a lot of nature that needs to be preserved. Environmental sciences and environmental protection therefore play a major role in research in Finland. The drive for sustainability is also evident in materials science and electrical engineering. But with so much nature, it can get quite lonely: On average, just 16 people live per square kilometre. It is therefore not surprising that Finland has always been at the forefront of telecommunications research. Although the Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia has now exited the mobile phone market, the company is still a world leader in patents relating to the 5G mobile phone standard, among other things.
