The North Macedonian city of Ohrid is located on the lake of the same name, near the Albanian border. The lake has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, along with its surroundings since 1980. Not only the lake is worth seeing, but also the ruins of the ancient city of Lychnidos, which, like excavation sites with finds up to 5000 years old, are partly located in what is now the city centre. Lychnidos was founded as a Greek settlement between about 800 and 700 BC. Later, the city was under Roman and then Byzantine rule. After that, it was Bulgarian for a long time until the Ottomans conquered it. Accordingly, a wide variety of buildings from different eras stand close together in Ohrid. An ancient theatre, medieval churches and the view of the lake from the hill make the city a worthwhile destination.
