It’s no wonder that a well-known series of travel guides is named after Marco Polo: with his travels to China in the 13th century, he paved the way for many other geographical discoveries. The travel reports he wrote about the Asian country also provided the knowledge base for many other explorers who travelled to China.
The origins of the traveller can be traced on a Croatian island: While the exact birthplace of Polo remains a matter of debate, one candidate is the house on Korčula where Marco Polo was born. The house belongs to the municipal government of Korčula and is partially open to the public. The view from the loggia is said to be one of the reasons for the city’s plans to open a museum about the famous traveller in the house.
