Science in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is one of the poorest countries in the European Union. And yet a Bulgarian is partly responsible for the fact that you can view this website: John Atanasoff, one of the fathers of the computer. Together with engineer Clifford Berry, Atanasoff built the first digital electronic computer from 1937 to 1942: the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC). Atanasoff died in 1995, but his 100th birthday on 4 October 2003 was widely celebrated, especially in Bulgaria.
