It sits enthroned on a 156-metre-high rock, high above the roofs of the Greek capital, visible from the Mediterranean Sea: the Acropolis of Athens. The original Acropolis had been almost completely destroyed by Persians. Thereupon the Athenian statesman Pericles had the city fortress rebuilt between 467 and 406 BC. The Parthenon, the largest temple, remained intact for almost 2,000 years. In 1986, UNESCO declared the Acropolis of Athens a World Heritage Site.
