AHHAA Science Centre

Tartu

Hands-on maths? That’s the aim of the AHHAA Science Centre in Estonia. If you thought formulas and equations were boring and dry, you should definitely not miss the ‘Aha, Cubed’ exhibition when you visit the Science Centre. There is plenty for young science fans to discover here: How does a monkey calculator work, what can you actually fit into a cubic metre and what can we learn from Pythagoras’ theorem? AHHAA is particularly aimed at young families. In the “Hall of Nature”, you can watch forest ants at work. In the “Hall of Technology”, the brave at heart can aim high: ride a bike on a tightrope stretched in the air or complete an astronaut training course.

What connects the cities of Hammerfest in Norway, Tartu in Estonia and Stara Nekrassiwka in Ukraine? It is not too obvious, but in fact the so-called Struve Geodetic Arc runs through these cities – and several countries between them. The German astronomer Wilhelm Struve wanted to determine the exact shape of the Earth by using […]

More than 1100 caves and abysses can be found in the Slovak Karst and Aggtelek National Parks on the border between Hungary and Slovakia. Almost nowhere else in the world are there so many underground structures. Many of them are so-called karst caves with metre-high stalagmites and stalactites made of limestone. Stalagmites grow upwards from […]

An international research team, including scientists from Germany, found these 45,000-year-old bone remains together with bone and stone tools, the remains of hunted animals and jewellery such as beads and pendants. This provided evidence that modern humans arrived […]

Have you ever wondered where we humans actually get our biological name, Homo sapiens, from? The double designation consists of the word for the genus and a second word for the species. This system is called ‘binary nomenclature’. It is used for all organisms. It was developed by Carl von Linné. He used this system for the […]
